The Symposium of Western Australian Neuroscience (SWAN) is a highlight for the local neuroscience community.
The event continues to facilitate collaboration and communication, and Perron Institute was one of the Platinum sponsors of the all-day program.
In total, 112 attendees gathered at T.L. Robertson Library on Curtin University’s Bentley campus last month.
Dr Natalie Matosin (University of Wollongong, NSW) presented the morning Plenary talk titled ‘The impacts of stress on human cortical glia: diving down to single-cell resolution’.
The afternoon Plenary was provided by Professor Christopher Sobey from La Trobe University in Victoria titled ‘Amniotic epithelial cells as a therapy for stroke’.
There were several presentations by Perron Institute affiliated researchers and students, including Dr Brittney Lins (Curtin University), Rebecca Ong (UWA) in the ‘Innovative techniques in neuroscience’ session, Twain Dai (CMMIT, Murdoch University) in the ‘Cognition’ session, and Rachel Singer (Curtin University/Perron Institute) and Parth Patel (Curtin University) in the ‘Neurodegeneration and Injury’ session.
Early Career Researcher Dr Jamie Beros (Perron Institute/UWA) opened the ‘Neuromodulation and Neurotherapeutics’ session, followed by Dr Bao Le (CMMIT, Murdoch University).
Professor Ken Nosaka (ECU) delivered a short session with everyday exercises for your brain.
Dr Lily Toomey, founder of Pitch Science and Curtin University/Perron Institute alumni, gave a talk titled ‘Getting your research seen: branding and social media’.
This year’s Brain Bee competitors participated in a quiz with attendees, which was a fun end to the presentations.
Several Perron Institute students and alumni received cash prizes.
PhD student Rebecca Ong (Perron Institute/UWA) received the Best Oral Presentation Prize in the PhD category. Undergraduate Research volunteer Parth Patel (Perron Institute/Curtin University) received the Best Oral Presentation prize in the Honours, Masters, or Undergraduate student Category.
