From an early age, Ruby Shehatha knew she would work in the medical field. Her father is a surgeon and she thought dentistry would be her career pathway.

“It was during my Bachelor of Science in Anatomy and Human Biology degree at UWA that I decided physiotherapy is what I wanted to do,” Ruby said. “Studying neuroanatomy ignited my interest in the neurological field and inspired me to complete a Masters in Physiotherapy at Curtin University.”

As a part-time Clinical Research Assistant in the Perron Institute clinic, Ruby said working in neurology is fulfilling and she enjoys seeing her patients improve following therapy.

“Being in a complex environment can be challenging at times, but it helps drive my passion for learning. Passing on knowledge to my patients and their family members is such an enjoyable part of what I do.

“I am motivated by my colleagues and patients who overcome the challenges they face.

“I also work in the outpatient department at Hollywood Hospital which enables me to translate current research into practice.

“A career highlight so far has been starting and running education sessions for my Parkinson’s patients at Hollywood Hospital and for external therapists.

“Early on in my career, I had an interest in research, and being in a neurological research hub such as the Perron Institute has encouraged me to be a better physiotherapist.

“My patients love to know about the latest research findings, so being surrounded by neurologists and researchers at the Perron Institute helps me accurately answer patient questions.

“The team at Perron Institute has been instrumental in my growth as a clinician. Clinic Manager, Sue Walters, has built a great team with her efficient and compassionate leadership. I have also enjoyed working with and learning from Claire Tucak, Linh Le-Kavanagh and Alexa Jefferson over the past few years. They have shared expert knowledge that has been invaluable to me.

“My advice for young clinicians and researchers is to never stop learning. The medical field is constantly evolving, and it is important to keep yourself engaged in current best practices and the latest research. Building connections within the industry is also crucial.

“Outside work, I love to travel and stay active at the gym and boxing classes. Another passion of mine is reading. I started a book club with my friends this year, and thanks to the club, I have been reading more books than ever!”
