The significant role of communities in supporting people and their carers during illness and end of life is the theme of an upcoming presentation by Professor Samar Aoun, Perron Institute Research Chair in Palliative Care at UWA, for the City of Stirling.

Her talk, Growing Compassion in Life and Death, will be held on 12 March between 10am and 12pm in the Banksia Room at Stirling Leisure Centres – Herb Graham – Mirrabooka. The session will include a Q&A and a light morning tea.

The presentation is part of a City of Stirling project to help grow Compassionate Communities and is supported by the WA Department of Health, the Perron Institute and The University of Western Australia.

Professor Aoun, WA Australian of the Year 2023, is a global leader in the areas of public health, palliative care, and compassionate communities research. She has influenced rapid system change and informed practice and policy at national and international levels.

“The Compassionate Communities approach is about understanding that everyone has a role to play when it comes to illness, caring, death and grief,” Professor Aoun said.

“It provides a practical framework, based on research evidence, on how to achieve partnering between formal and informal networks and increase people’s sense of connectedness so they’re not isolated at their time of greatest need.

“As communities we need to re-learn the old ways of caring for one another. We only die once, so let’s make it a good one.”

The talk on 12 March will explain how and why each of us can play a stronger role in supporting people who are caring, dying or grieving to increase their sense of connectedness in a time of need.
