Brain plasticity researcher Dr Jamie Beros is the recipient of Business Events Perth’s 2023 Perron Institute Aspire Award.

Eleven of Western Australia’s exceptional researchers, academics and professionals were announced recently as recipients of the Aspire Awards. Beneficiaries will receive travel grants supporting their attendance at an international conference.

Dr Beros, a postdoctoral researcher at the Perron Institute and The University of Western Australia, completed his PhD via UWA and the Perron Institute in 2020. His current research in the area of Brain Plasticity is helping further understand the brain in the context of adolescent mood disorders including depression, and the efficacy of non-invasive forms of brain stimulation.

“I’m grateful to be awarded the Aspire Award, it’s a great initiative especially for early career researchers,” Dr Beros said.

“It’s really important for us to go out and showcase our research, especially to an international audience, and then also make collaborations to increase the reach and impact of our research.”

With the award, Dr Beros aims to attend the International Brain Stimulation Conference hosted in Japan 2025.

Perron Institute CEO Steve Arnott said Dr Beros is investigating an exciting area and receiving the award demonstrates his character.

“He is prepared to share his knowledge widely, he goes to rural areas, community events and schools,” Mr Arnott said.

The Aspire Awards have once again demonstrated Western Australia’s excellence and position at the forefront of global innovation.

Business Events Perth CEO, Gareth Martin, said Business Events Perth proudly recognises a group of Western Australia’s brightest minds who will showcase the State’s leading capabilities to the world.

“The recipients of the 2023 Aspire Awards represent the diversity of Western Australia’s research and entrepreneurial strengths and exemplify the innovation that Western Australia is renowned for,” said Mr Martin.

“Providing this opportunity for knowledge exchange allows a cohort of Western Australia’s exceptional researchers, innovators and professionals to connect with other like-minded, global leaders in their field.”

The Aspire Awards have led to a number of large-scale international conferences being confirmed for Western Australia over the years, including the 15th Congress of the Pan-Asian Committee for Treatment and Research In Multiple Sclerosis (PACTRIMS) last month. Perron Institute’s 2022 Aspire Award Recipient, Dr Marzena Fabis-Pedrini, played an integral role in Perth’s successful bid and was the Chair of the Local Organising Committee.
