We offer an integrated Inflammatory Myopathies Clinic also known as the Neuromuscular Clinic, where patients are provided with opportunities to take part in research activities alongside their clinic appointments which provide comprehensive management and treatment.
For the Myositis team, partnering with patients to provide the best possible care and research experience is important. In collaboration with the Myositis Association Australia, the team lead a Myositis Consumer Research Panel and work closely with the local chapter of the Myositis Association to keep connected with patient needs. Each year the team host a ‘Research Update Day’ between September and October where patients and their families are invited to come and hear about the research activity and to meet with researchers and other patients.
The clinic is staffed by Professor Merrilee Needham, an established neurologist and Head of Myositis Research at Perron Institute, and several allied health staff from Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH). Patients have an opportunity to contribute blood and urine samples to the Myositis Discovery Program’s growing biobank and may also opt-in to research communications, to keep updated on research activities and outcomes.
