Building capacity in managing motor neurone disease – workshop with MNDAWA
Caring for people with motor neurone disease is the theme of a free one-day workshop to be held at the Boulevard Forum Function Centre, Floreat on 8 May.
The workshop will be presented by the Motor Neurone Disease Association of WA in partnership with the Perron Institute as part of Motor Neurone Disease Awareness Week. It is targeting doctors, nurses and other health professionals as well as community members caring for people with this muscle wasting, life limiting disease.
Neurologist Dr Robert Edis, who heads the motor neurone disease (MND) clinics at the Perron Institute, will speak about the functional changes that accompany MND and the management of symptoms.
Professor Samar Aoun, a Perron Institute Senior Research Fellow and Professor of Palliative Care, will speak about psychosocial care for people with MND and their families.
Motor neurone disease (MND) is a progressive neurological condition. The cause is unknown and the symptoms can vary from person to person.
“Although there is at yet no cure for MND, much can be done to improve the quality of life and quality of care for those affected,” Professor Aoun said.
“The workshop on MND, part of a state-wide education program, has been designed to improve and share knowledge and build the capacity of health professionals and the community for better patient outcomes.”
The genetics of motor neurone disease is a major area of research at the Perron Institute, aiming to develop new and personalised treatments.
The Motor Neurone Disease Association of WA is the specialist organisation in Western Australia for people living with MND, their carers and families providing vital care and support services.
